Thanks, MJ for the informative post. I liked how your three example questions and how they can be improved with HMW. I plan to read Tim Brown's book.

As I read your comment, I began thinking about a strategy we used with children in the elementary school where I was a principal. Chick Moorman, an outstanding author in education who focuses on empowering children to make good behavioral choices always tells teachers that when a child is "stuck" in their thinking, one strategy to use is to say, "Pretend you know the answer."

When I taught this strategy to my teachers, they thought I was crazy! I think they thought I was telling them to ask the children to "fake it". I was not! In reality, when you ask a child to "Pretend you know the answer" they actually "act" their way into solving the problem. What a great way to empower students into becoming good problem solvers.

As the teachers were reflecting on Chick's strategy, one teacher, who happened to be one of my more experienced teachers, who rarely took risks, piped up. She explained that she told one of her more difficult students to "Pretend he knew the answer" to solving a social conflict he was having. She said it actually worked.. She also said that soon after that, she heard other students using this phrase with one another. Amazing!

So, when you are feeling stuck, "Pretend like you know the answer!"

You're exactly right. America's education system, focused on it is on standardization and conformity and zero tolerance for deviation, really is short-changing everyone. To my eyes, it's gotten this way pretty quickly, over the past twenty years or so. When I was a student in public schools in the 70s and 80s, I was recognized as one of the odd-kids-out. While they did try to keep my some corralled in with the rest of the kids, they didn't actively discourage or punish my creativity and, er, social flair.

They did that in college.

As someone who has been participating in commerce or marketing online from 95 on, I am prepared to agree with Mr Siegel. As a worker, the internet aspect of labor means becoming a better interface for the machine. For the consumer it means being more minutely and completely marketed to. The appearance of unlimited choice filtered for you by the same folks who already know what they want you to buy.
I am a heavy user of the web, but like most things in the hands of a rapacious system, the results are often frightening.
